“We always think we are going to live forever. The dying aspect we will never accept. The one thing about having this kind of warning is how you appreciate every single day of life.” ODLR
Born July 22, 1932, in the Dominican Republic. At the age of 18, he moved to Spain to study abstract art at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. Later discovering his interest in fashion, he landed an apprenticeship with Cristobal Balenciaga. From 1993 to 2002, de la Renta designed for Balmain’s Haute Couture collection, making him the first Dominican to design for a French Couture house.
A handwritten note from his stepdaughter Eliza and her husband Alex, the company’s CEO is on display on Oscar de la Renta’s website.
Personally this is a heartbreaking reality and a hard one to accept. Oscar to me was the biggest of role models, not only because of all his achievements in the fashion world but because he was a proud and graceful ambassador for our beloved Dominican Republic.
