If you’re in or near the New York area, I strongly recommend you to take a ride out to the Rockaway Peninsula to experience a surreal Art filled day with sun, sand and the beach as your backdrop. For those un-familiar with this area, The Rockaway, is the name of a Long Island peninsula located within Queens, a borough in New York City.
Rockaway! is a free Art festival sponsored by MoMA PS1 and world known artist Patti Smith, with many other local organizations. It celebrates the re-opening of Fort Tilden and the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula which was badly damaged during Hurricane Sandy.
Below are some of the cool places I stumbled upon during my wanderlust visit to the Rockaway.
Rockaway Beach Surf Club is a cultural event space, restaurant, and bar devoted to promoting the love of surfing, conserving the environment, and supporting its neighborhood.
Patti Smith installed a gilded bed with white linens in an abandoned locomotive building. With time the bed will deteriorate while still remaining in place, a symbol of courage and resilience, characteristics we all saw from residents of the Rockaway.
